Family visits October 2002

Mike and the stone pileWhat was once only referred too as ‘The Site’ is now a polished jewel of a home tucked discretely away next to a pond on a hill in the woods. The home is finished, but there will, we suspect, always be a never-ending list of projects to keep Cindy and Mike busy. Just to make sure we got our exercise and had something to do after our partying, Mike had arranged to have a huge pile of stone dumped in the middle of driveway. Mike did most of the heavy work, but I managed to tire muscles moving some of the rock to neaten up the walk and build a parking lot.

She'll have the pond full of rocks in about 1000 yearsJeff arrived with Daniel and Heather. Cindy and Ruth had a ball keeping them entertained, or was it the other way around? We suspect Aunt Cindy and Uncle Mike’s house will become a favorite with the kids since Cindy is slowly accumulating a collection of unique and fascinating toys. For Dani, however, the big attraction is still the pond and trying to fill it by throwing in rocks. Looks like throwing rocks into water is something in the Kalen genes.

Kids won round one with grammie ------ and round two with grampsThere’s nothing like grandkids to wear one out. The pictures tell the tale. First Dani and Heather worked me over and then still going strong took on Ruth and won. We both left as two very tired but happy grandparents after our all too brief visit.

Linda's new muleRuth and Linda went off riding on Linda’s new mechanical mule. Later I tried it out with Steve. It’s a fun way to get around the farm. Saw parts of the farm we never knew existed.

Steve the alchemist plans to turn plastic to wood.Seemed funny taking the cockpit table with us as we left Odyssey. It fit nicely in the trunk and would be handy to have as we worked out the details with Steve to replace our white plastic table with real wood. Early one morning we climbed into the garage rafters and selected walnut planks that had been drying for a number of years. Steve got them from a tree hit by lightening that he taken down. Having a shop that rivals Norm’s on new Yankee Workshop made quick work of converting huge rough-cut planks into manageable, planed boards for making a table. Even in the rough state they look wonderful against the stark white of the table.

Four days had evaporated in the magic of being in the warm embrace of family. We left happy but tired from all the activity as we headed back to Washington.
